Biographical Notes
Born in Switzerland in 1924, Jean Amédée Hoerni earned Ph.D.s in physics at the Universities of Geneva and Cambridge. After moving to the U.S. he worked as a research fellow with Linus Pauling at the California Institute of Technology. He joined Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory in 1956 and left in September 1957 to co-found Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation with seven other dissidents. At Fairchild, Hoerni conceived the planar silicon transistor in December 1957 and successfully developed it in early 1959. His planar processing technique revolutionized semiconductor manufacturing and was adopted worldwide. It also led to the invention of the monolithic integrated circuit by R. Noyce at Fairchild. Hoerni left Fairchild with J. Last in early 1961 to found the Amelco divison of Teledyne, Inc., to manufacture integrated circuits. He left Teledyne in 1963 for Union Carbide, heading a research unit. In 1967 he established Intersil (short for International Silicon) with mainly European investors, producing MOS transistors and integrated circuits for calculators and watches. He founded several other companies, including Telmos to make high-voltage MOS devices. Hoerni received numerous industry awards. He is most widely known outside industry circles for his endowment of the Central Asia Institute to build schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He died in 1997.

Specific entries include: "Method of protecting exposed p-n junctions at the surface of silicon transistors by oxide masking techniques" (pp. 3-4) this was his first expression of the planar process – U.S. patent 3025589; "Effect of gold-doping on lifetimes in transistors" (pp. 7-11) – U.S. patent 3108914; “Use of selective control on electron and hole lifetimes in semiconductor devices” (pp. 12-15) – U.S. patent 3184347; “PNP planar transistors” (pp. 17-18); “On the application of the Merck growing technique to device structures;” “Observations on the impact and applications of epitaxial films” (pp. 23-24); “Logic using unipolar transistors” proposes a practical method of implementing the ideas of Walmark at RCA (pp. 26–28).

The cult of the Great Mother is probably the oldest of all religions.The earliest Neolithic sculptures of the Great Mother (Magna Mater) dates from between 6500-3500 BC. It is a time of matriarchate in cultures of the Mediterranean, but also to the East, and is associated with the principle of fertility, birth and creation. In time, the Great Mother would become the major link for inter-relating the spirit of the Neolithic man in Macedonia and left deep traces in the culture of this land. Today we are witnessing a strong mark that left matriarchate on indigenous cultures and beliefs, which are preserved in the name of Macedonia.

The rotating drum technology allowed ERA to deliver the world’s first production stored-program computer (ATLAS – ERA 1101) to a customer site in October 1950. The engineers making the installation delivery to the National Security Agency predecessor were Frank Mullaney and Jack Hill. As shown in the photo below, these drum products came in various sizes. They were first used in several classified processors, then in the early 1100 computer series and the UNIVAC SS-80 and SS-90 computers. Dr. Cohen and Sid Rubens are credited with patenting the rotating magnetic drum. The drum development engineers and management shown in this early 50’s photo, left to right are: William Keye, Arnold Hendrickson, Robert Perking, Frank Mullaney, Dr. Arnold Cohen, and John ‘Jack’ Hill.

This is the marketing brochure for the DEC PDP-1. Announced in 1960, Digital Equipment Corporation's (DEC) PDP-1 marked a radical shift in the philosophy of computer design: it was the first commercial computer that focused on interaction with the human user rather than the efficient use of computer cycles. Basing his designs on MIT's Lincoln Laboratory TX-0 and TX-2 computers, Ben Gurley designed the 18-bit machine in under three–and–a–half months. DEC produced only 50 of these machines. It also had an optional high-resolution graphical display that MIT students used to play Spacewar!, the first interactive computer video game.
