(Van onze fotoredacteur) ZOALS te verwachten was, moest er wel een reactie komen op wat in de lente van vorig jaar door Kodak werd gelanceerd en door velen als een der belangrijkste ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de amateurfotocamera's werd gezien: het Instamatic-systeem. Het antwoord is het „Rapid"-systeeni, evenals het Instamatic-systeem een combinatie van vereenvoudigde filminleg en daartoe geëigende camera's.
HET laden van voor het gebruik van Rapid-cassetten vervaardigde camera's geschiedt aldus:
De Rapid-cassette — vrijwel gelijk aan een normale kleinbeeldpatroon — wordt in de camera gelegd. Een klein stukje film steekt uit de patroon. Bij het sluiten van de camera komt de film precies in het filmkanaal te liggen. Aan de andere kant van het filmkanaal ligt een (lege) Rapid patroon; gaat men de film transporteren, dan schiet hij automatisch in de lege patroon. Daarin wordt hij op een plastic spoel opgewonden, die tussen twee veren hangt. De Rapid-patroon bevat 12 opnamen normaal kleinbeeld; zowel aan het begin van de film (gewoon 35 mm tweezijdig geperforeerd) als aan het einde zijn de noodzakelijke gegevens als merk, soort en filmgevoeligheid aangegeven en bovendien is vermeld; Begin of Einde. Terugspoelen van de film vervalt; de belichte film wordt in de opwindcassette naar de fotohandel gebracht. De nu lege patroon gaat vervolgens als opwikkel-cassette dienst doen.
HET ,,Rapid"-systeem is niet gebonden aan een enkele camera- en filmfabrikant, doch is een internationaal systeem, op de eerste plaats door de Westduitse industrie ontwikkeld, maar waaraan ook filmfabrikanten van tal van andere landen deelnemen. Aan een kant mag dit een in zekere zin betreurenswaardige uitbreiding van het camera-assortiment leiden, aan de andere kant betekent deze uitbreiding het voordeel van een grotere keuze en vrije keuze in camera's zowel als in films en dus ook van concurrentie. (Films o.a. Adox, Agfa, Ferrania. Gevaert, Ilford en Perutz). Heden verschijnen de eerste voor het Rapid-systeem gebouwde camera's op de markt. Niet alleen Duitse camera's van eenvoudig model tot spiegelreflexcamera's met verwisselbare objectieven zal men op den duur kunnen verwachten, ook Japan zal camera's voor dit systeem op de markt brengen. De camera's zullen (zowel normaal- als halfkleinbeeld) voorzover zij automatisch werken, door een speciale inrichting aan de cassetten ook automatisch de juiste filmgevoeligheidswaarde instellen.

De zacht genoemde naam leek te horen hij de lispeling van geluiden, bij de adem van de waringinboom die boven onze hoofden zweefde. 'Sardjono', de naam trilde zonder enige verwondering om ons heen. Sardjono was over de oceanen in een ander deel van deze aarde waar op dat ogenblik de middag nog volop was.
Toch was hij ook hier, hij had zich aan ons kenbaar gemaakt.

Testing an Ilford Sporti
Sporti is a medium format roll 120 film viewfinder camera made by Dacora for Ilford introduced in c.1959.
Another feature is that the shutter isn't activated by pressing the shutter release like it says on Camerapedia, but by letting it go again. I must say I like that feature – and I found out about it in time. This particular camera has a minor light leak, as you can see in the three sample images. The lens is fine and yields nice, soft images, but overall the camera is a bit too bulky to carry around for a walkabouter like me.
Oh, according to photomemorabilia.co.uk, this is a 'European' model with the grey leatherette covering which Ilford believed was not best suited to the more conservative UK 'taste'.

Developing disc film
Here is set-up for developing a Kodak disc film for people who don't have a dark room. I admit it's not very elegant, but then I found my first exposed disc in a second-hand camera so the images had no sentimental value for me. Besides, the image counter was at 5 when I found it, so even in the best of scenarios there are only 4 exposed shots on this film. Plenty of room for an experiment I'd say.
When I saw the actual size of the cartridge, I reckoned I could jam the entire disc into a Paterson reel. And this worked, it gives a neat fit, see the image below. After that, you can easily develop the disc in regular C-41. There is a very good tutorial for beginners about this on Flickr. Since the disc is jammed tight, agitation is no problem.
All I have to do now is find a way to scan negatives 1-4. Easier said than done. And Kodak disc film was discontinued on 31 December 1999, so even if there is something there, it will probably not be very spectacular.

The other day I landed a charming little Agfa Box 54 and my first roll of film yielded some nice shots. Here's one on Flickr, check it out. The lens is a bit moldy but I decided to leave that for now.
I quickly popped in a second roll and somehow forgot these boxes – and films in general – need a bit more attention than modern-day cameras. For instance, if you carry the camera around in a bag, the shutter setting lever may move, meaning the shutter may remain open after release:
You mustn't forget to turn the winder knob after each exposure:
If you aren't sure the exposed film is fully wound up onto the take-up spool, do not open the box:
Using the viewfinder on a bright sunny day may be tricky, especially if you already need reading glasses on a daily basis:
And: When you develop the film in caffenol, be sure to generously stir the solution so there won't be any blobs on the negative.
