Een soort van collage in de brievenbus

Vandaag kreeg ik een leuke puzzel met de post: een ansichtkaart uit de VS met daarop een sticker, en dat geheel dan verpakt in een envelop waarvan één kant transparant was, zodat het adres op de kaart leesbaar was.

PARS Manual Downflow

Voor de goede orde: de ansichtkaart met sticker in de envelop was niet beschadigd en de adressering was volledig correct en foutloos. Ik meld dat laatste omdat PARS (Postal Automation Redirection System) kennelijk bedoeld is voor onjuist geadresseerde post. Dus eigenlijk heb ik geen idee waarom deze ansichtkaart zo fraai verpakt was door mijn Postmaster. Maar ik stel het wel op prijs natuurlijk.

Transkribus (N=1)

“Met Transkribus kun je eenvoudig tekst automatisch herkennen, naadloos bewerken, moeiteloos samenwerken en zelfs je eigen AI trainen voor het digitaliseren en interpreteren van historische documenten, in welke vorm dan ook”, staat zo mooi op de Transkribus-website. Laat ik nou net een heel eenvoudig stukje tekst hebben om dit te proberen. Dus een gratis account aangemaakt en hoopvol aan de slag gegaan. Het resultaat is eigenlijk genoeg om niet verder te willen. ChatGPT en Copilot zijn ook niet best, maar in elk geval beter dan dit.

Is Transkribus a Good OCR for Handwriting?

After assessing the accuracy, performance, and price of Tanskribus, the answer is no; it’s not the best OCR for handwriting. Here’s why:

Accuracy Problems

One of the biggest reasons that Transkribus can’t be regarded as a good OCR for handwriting is that even though it uses AI to recognize handwriting, its level of accuracy isn’t reliable. We tested it many times and found that it often makes errors, especially with handwriting that is old and hard to read. In one of our tests, we found that it misinterpreted more than 30% of the text, leaving out words. If you’re working with a document that has faded or messy handwriting, then you’re likely to notice many errors with Transkribus.

Uiteraard geven we nieuwe technologieën wel degelijk het voordeel van de twijfel, dus over een paar jaar proberen we het gewoon nog een keer.
