Portret van Conan Doyle, gephotografeerd bij het medium Hope in 1919, te Crewe. Rechts het „phantoom” van Conan Doyle’s zoon, die in den oorlog sneuvelde.
Op het gelaat van het „phantoom” ziet men duidelijk (in de oorspronkelijke photo) een netwerk, dat niet anders is dan het raster van een cliché. De aanwezigheid van dit raster bewijst, dat het portret eenvoudig uit een krant geknipt werd, die het opnam bij den dood van den jongeman.
