Beelden aangetroffen op een belichte rol Kodak T-MAX 100 van onbekende herkomst, tegelijk met deze rol toevallig in mijn bezit gekomen. Geen idee of het hier ook om dezelfde fotograaf gaat. Foto 1 is een fraai Nederlands stadsbeeld maar helaas herken ik niet waar dit is. Foto 2 levert niet veel extra informatie op. Net als bij de andere rol waren de meeste beelden al onbruikbaar geworden, te lang bewaard waarschijnlijk.

Ontwikkeld in caffenol, 70 minuten standontwikkeling.

Beelden aangetroffen op een belichte rol Kodacolor II 120 van onbekende herkomst. Op de rest van de rol hebben de tijd en het licht hun werk gedaan. Deze beelden zaten het dichtst bij de spoel en zijn waarschijnlijk daarom bewaard gebleven. De mensen op de foto zullen dit waarschijnlijk zelf nooit zien.

Teruggevonden

Kennelijk heb ik ooit eens etiketjes van flesjes Wostok-limonade geweekt en die in een boek gestopt zodat ze mooi plat werden. Dat was ik helemaal vergeten tot ik ze laatst ineens weer spontaan terugvond. Ik heb alleen geen idee waarom ik ze überhaupt bewaard had. Misschien om mezelf te helpen onthouden dat ik dit erg lekker vond? Helaas is Wostok-limonade erg lastig in het wild te vinden.

Nu ik dit terugzie, vraag ik me wel direct af waarom de smaak op het ene etiket in vijf talen staat en op het andere maar in eentje.

How came they there?

Het boek The Veil Lifted, Modern Developments of Spirit Photography van J. Traill Taylor is interessant leesvoer. De insteek is als volgt:

“For several years I have experienced a strong desire to ascertain by personal investigation the amount of truth in the ever-recurring allegation that figures other than those visually present in the room appeared on a sensitive plate.”

Alleen al de in het voorwoord vermelde classificatie van geestfotografie is de moeite waard:

The following may serve as a rough classification of what are called spirit photographs: --

1. Portraits of physical entities not seen by normal vision.
2. Pictures of objects not seen nor thought of by the sitter or by the medium or operator; such as flowers, words, crosses, crowns, lights, and various emblematic objects.
3. Pictures which have the appearance of being copied from statues, paintings, or drawings. Sometimes they are busts or heads only. The flatness in some photographs of this class is supposed, by persons who have not investigated the subject, to be proof that the photographs are produced in a fraudulent manner.
4. Pictures of what are called materialised forms visible to normal sight.
5. Pictures of the "wraith" or "double" of persons still in the body.
6. Portraits on plates which developers have failed to bring into view, but that can be seen and described by clairvoyants and by mediums when in trance and whose descriptions agree, though made independently.
   

Met name punt 3 is interessant. Hier wordt aangegeven dat het feit dat een geest op een foto er platter uitziet dan de rest van de foto, niet per definitie betekent dat het geen geest is. Als je dit tot je laat doordringen, snap je ook beter waarom bijvoorbeeld de foto’s van de Cottingley Fairies niet direct als nep werden beschouwd maar serieus werden genomen, al lijkt dat voor een kijker van honderd jaar later onwaarschijnlijk. Wij zien in het merendeel van de gevallen in één oogopslag dat er iets niet pluis is aan sommige foto’s. Maar dat is een inzicht dat in de begintijd van de fotografie nog niet bestond en waar de mensen van toen dus eigenlijk niet op afgerekend moeten worden.

Tot slot nog een aardige foto die zonder camera is gemaakt, simpelweg door een medium de gevoelige plaat te laten vasthouden.

“An opportunity occurred in July to try the experiment with a lady who is not known to Spiritualistic or occult circles—albeit she is a good medium and clairvoyant. A dry plate from my packet of unused plates was placed in a mahogany slide. The lady then held the slide between the palms of her hands. She was under continuous and close observation in a well-lighted room, and one end of the slide was held by myself. On putting the plate in the developer, the picture of a child appeared on it.”

Psychic Picture Without a Camera
Natuurlijk zijn er allerlei conclusies te verbinden aan deze teksten en foto’s, maar dat mag iedereen voor zich doen. Voor de geïnteresseerde is dit – ondanks de enigszins chaotische opbouw – een erg aardig boek, maar het is wel wat lastig te vinden.

Olympus Trip met Agfa Isopan IF (vervaldatum juli 1974), ontwikkeld in Rodinal 1+75, 21 minuten op 20 °C. Kan beter maar kan ook heel wat slechter. De volgende rollen gaan in D-76 en caffenol voor vergelijkingsmateriaal.
