Schijn bedriegt

Dit exemplaar van de Pañcadaśī (Pancadashi, Pancadāsi, Pancadasi, Pancan-dashi, Pamcadashi, Panchadashi) van Sri Vidyaranya Swami is zonder twijfel een eenvoudige, goedkope uitgave. Het bindwerk laat te wensen over, de tekst op het omslag en de rug – inclusief het ohm-teken – is met stickers aangebracht, en het papier is van matige kwaliteit. 

Toch behoort dit boek tot de absolute hoogtepunten van mijn bescheiden bibliotheek. Waarom? Omdat de inzichten letterlijk van de pagina’s afspatten. Als iemand me vraagt welk boek ik zou meenemen naar een onbewoond eiland, dan is het zonder twijfel deze klassieker.

Practising till death

If a person does not realize the Self even after practising till death, he will surely realize it in a future life when all the obstacles will have been eliminated.

Perfectly harmless

To bring to an end your worldly dealings, you may practise contemplation as much as you like, but I know the worldly dealings to be perfectly harmless. Why should I then meditate?

Both luminous and dark

The Bhāṭṭas say that the Śruti declares: 'In sleep neither the seer nor seeing is absent'. Therefore the nature of Ātman is both luminous and dark, like that of a fire-fly.

The Sāṅkhyas, who separate Puruṣa and Prakṛti, reject the possibility of both consciousness and unconscioiusness being the nature of Ātman. According to them the Ātman is without parts and must be of the nature of consciousness only.
