Buddha Machine

"The Buddha Machine is a small plastic box that plays nine ambient loops composed by Beijing-based music duo FM3. The loops repeat endlessly until the "track" is switched or the two AA batteries run out. The machine has its own built-in speaker and there is also a headphone jack for a more personal experience. But the charm of the device isn't nearly as specific: The Buddha Machine has a calming presence in today's fast paced world.
It's charm mixes with FM3's innovative music to provide the owner with an experience that is hard to define... Essentially, It's a box with a life, a tool for living, and to many, it's a friend. Founded in 1999 by Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian, FM3 are considered pioneers of electronic music in China. Inspired by Buddhist prayer boxes found at temples around Asia, the duo produced 500 units of their custom-made Buddha Machine in 2004. Fueled by praise in media as diverse as tech blog BoingBoing.net, the New York Times and the avant-rock Arthur Magazine, sales of the device topped 50,000 units in 2008."

Onthechting
De vraag is natuurlijk: zou Gautama ook Boeddha zijn geworden als hij in Nederland had geleefd?

The Snail Martyrs
There is a later legend that when the Buddha was sitting under the Bodhi tree he was so deep in meditation that he was unaware that it was extremely hot. A group of snails saw him and realising the importance of his thoughts, crawled up to cover and protect his head with their bodies. The snails died from exposure to the hot sun and became honoured as martyrs who had died to protect the Buddha. In some images of the Buddha, his hair curls do indeed resemble snails to remind people of this story.
