"Indeed, in the suburbs, roads are designed for cars and not people. Their profiles, dimensions, and proportions contribute nothing to codify urban character. In suburbia, there are no streets, just roads. Although they are functioning, other roles of public space cannot emerge because there are no physical conditions that may provide the cues of social contact."

"The shopkeeper or greengrocer would often temporarily occupy the sidewalk with their displays and baskets full of colourful products of nature. The sidewalk will become an extension of his shop, but at the same time it will become a part of the street setting. In the end, no one will complain about their business purposes, although their activiteies penetrate into the public domain. In this manner, people are laying claim on certain territory, believing it is their right to do so and in such a way they can protect their domain. If it is well done and well maintained, passers-by will have some positive visual experience without noticing the territorial skirmishes that are taking place."

"Suburban developers are, however, eager to apply a successful planning model to the entire housing market regardless of location. Therefore, suburban types have even been built within the city itself. These living environment-types, as well as the planning and design doctrine from which they develop, appear like boomerangs returning back to traditional cities. [...] Hence, a mass-culture strikes back, changing the city's nature."

"The whole suburban spatial structure is based upon clear division or even segregation between property, funcions, domains and people. Nonetheless, houses are additionally adorned with burglar alarms. Protection of ownership and privacy are ideals that disrupt any possibility of urbanity at all."

"A small, from one to three meters deep front garden has no other function than to distance the house from the pavement. In a row, these gardens become expositions of naive gardening art, reflecting the desires and culture of the residents. Still these mostly naive spatial arrangements bring a glimpse of humanity into the sterile public room."

"Paradoxically, the phenomenon of suburbia represents a community of people who came here to be left alone. The spatial configuration of suburbia represents this controversy precisely."

"[...] Current planning processess, design principles and rules, are based upon a no-conflict doctrine, which, applied in practice, delivers no-relationship spatial configurations. Private and public domains are divided by sharp boundaries, with a wide range of strategies and protective elements that have been established to prevent any disturbance between them."
