Dit is Iris the Youngste

Handgeschreven tekst, overdwars: “Dit is Iris the Youngste.”

“A most disagreeable and threatening sort of restlessness spoiled all my happiness”

Omslag van A Ray of Darkness, Margiad Evans (Welsh Women's Classics Book 31)
“I was very busy – there was much to be done for I like cleanliness indoors, and there was the garden; gradually a most disagreeable and threatening sort of restlessness spoiled all my happiness and took away my peace. It is hard to describe, but it was as though I couldn't stop hurrying. I lingered over nothing, neither work nor loveliness. As soon as I began a thing I longed for it to be over; and my smallest jobs I could see and count ahead of me in endless time. I hurried to get them done and when they were done I had no spirit in me to enjoy the time saved by the haste. Precious sights slipped past me: one short gaze at a lovely thing, the moon or the evening star over the fields, or a flower or the face of my really beloved old neighbour, and I would shoot away to something else. Thus concentration began to slip [...].”

No. 239. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1711. (pag. 267)
The universities of Europe, for many years, carried on their debates by syllogism, insomuch that we see the knowledge of several centuries laid out into objections and answers, and all the good sense of the age cut and minced into almost an infinitude of distinctions.
When our universities found there was no end of wrangling this way, they invented a kind of argument, which is not reducible to any mood or figure in Aristotle. It was called the Argumentum Basilinum (others write it Bacilinum or Baculinum), which is pretty well expressed in our English word club‑law. When they were not able to refute their antagonist, they knocked him down.

The Projectionist’s Nightmare

The Projectionist’s Nightmare

This is the projectionist’s nightmare :
A bird finds its way into the cinema,
finds the beam, flies down it,
smashes into a screen depicting a garden,
a sunset and two people being nice to each other.
Real blood, real intestines, slither down
the likeness of a tree.
‘This is no good,’ screams the audience,
‘This is not what we came to see.’

‘Sometimes publishers make revisions to forestall problems, knowing that states like California and Texas won’t tolerate certain words. For example, a story titled “A Perfect Day for Ice Cream” by Patricia Zettner was selected by two textbook publishers for inclusion in junior high school literature anthologies after it had appeared in Seventeen magazine. To comply with California’s ban on junk foods, the publishers removed references to chili burgers, pizza, and ice cream and changed the title to “A Perfect Day.” The story’s allusions to “kamikaze ball” and Gloria Steinem were edited out to avoid likely complaints in California about ethnic stereotyping and likely objections in Texas to feminist references.’

Me dunkt

etymology.com:
methinks (v.)
"it appears to me" (now archair or poetic only), from Old English me þyncð "it seems to me," from me (pron.), dative of I, + þyncð, third person singular of þyncan "to seem," reflecting the Old English distinction between þyncan "to seem" and related þencan "to think," which bedevils modern students of the language (see think). The two thinks were constantly confused, then finally merged, in Middle English. Related: Methought.

Verschil qua taal

Uit: The Sacred Wood, T.S. Eliot

Unless you are using a Latin phrase such as "sine qua non," you should not use "qua" in any English sentences. If you do, no one will know what you mean.

Nee, gewoon in bed !

Sn

“Sn usually imply the nose, and what relates to it. From the Latin nasus are derived the French nez and the English nose; and nesse, a promontory, as projecting like a nose. But as if from the consonants ns taken from nasus, and transposed that they may the better correspond, sn denote nasus; and thence are derived many words that relate to the nose, as snout, sneeze, snore, snort, snear, snicker, snot, snivel, snite, snuff, snuffle, snaffle, snarl, snudge.”

Thylke

Truth is a thing that ever I will keep ... unto thylke day in which I creep into ... my sepulchre

Japan | Why Japanese comics and cartoons so different from the Japanese people and society?

"I've never seen a Japanese girl with big boobs, never seen people act so easy to easy or to each other, without being aware, others in fact, Japan was considered a very lonely place, because they are often ignored .

It has long been accepted by psychologists serve and observers of Japanese society / culture, manga and anime as an emotional outlet for a group of other oppressed people. This can manifest in a nice and funny or disturbing, depending on the mood of the author (usually the manga creators are the writer and artist, as opposed to American comics). Hyper-violent images and sexual usually sufficient in all cultures as a form of "help" – that is, if you know what you do not have to actually move – but there are cases in which many of these led to the tragedy out real life.

Why the cartoons in the United States so different from the American people and society?

Yes, I see the yellow pad, running all the time, not once met this guy fairies in pink and green hair Father God! Who would have thought, eh?

It is odd, so that in three dimensions to it in comparison!

In fact, only how to draw, and if you think that anime is trying to 'just' to see Elfen Lied, Higurashi no Naku Koro or none.

If the characters like the typical person who would make a boring story. You must be very bold to make the very active and crazy. It's kinda like life vicariously through the characters.

They are fantasies, get over yourself."

Etymology Corner: Sandbox

The etymology of the term sandbox is straightforward. Colloquially, a sandbox is just a box full of sand in which children can play.

In computer security, the term sandbox was borrowed to mean a safe place where (often untrusted) programs can play without danger of taking out critical resources. Apache offers sandboxes for projects (e.g. the Lucene Sandbox and Commons Sandbox).

A related concept is Apache's incubator, aimed at providing a trial space for projects aspiring to Apache status.

Wordle > FAQ >Sexsmith

Wordle > FAQ > Sexsmith:

Could you remove or change the name of the “Sexsmith” font? I don't want my students to see it.

Yes, with pleasure. First, please write to the musician Ron Sexsmith, after whom the font is named, and get him to change his name. You may also want to write to Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, and see if you can get them to change their name before any of your students inadvertently consult a map. Christian rocker Paula Sexsmith ought to be in your sights as well; don't let her feel left out. Take a slapshot at goalie Tyson Sexsmith, while you're at it.

“Sexsmith” is a common surname and placename, especially in Canada. It's analogous to “Shoemaker”, “Fletcher”, or just plain “Smith”; it's a profession. A “seax smith” was someone who made seaxes.

The place-names Middlesex, Essex, Sussex, etc., all derive their names from the seax.

If the children of Boston and its suburbs can grow up in Middlesex county, perhaps giggling occasionally at the mention of the sheriff or courthouse thereof in local news broadcasts or 5th-grade geography lessons, then I believe that the children of the world can weather the mere sight of those letters, in that context. Good luck!
